Dramatic F1 season openers

The start of every Formula 1 season often brings excitement because new cars, driver changes and rule updates can create unexpected and dramatic races.

Ahead of the 2026 Australian Grand Prix, Motorsport.com listed some of the most dramatic season-opening races in F1 history since the championship began in 1950.

One memorable opener was the 2003 Australian Grand Prix, where David Coulthard won after starting near the back and taking advantage of changing conditions and mistakes from rivals.

Another dramatic race was the 2002 Australian Grand Prix, which saw a huge first-corner crash involving several cars, creating chaos at the very start of the season.

More recent examples include the 2022 Bahrain Grand Prix, where Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc beat Max Verstappen after a fierce battle and late reliability problems for Red Bull.

The list highlights how season-opening races often produce surprises, crashes, and unexpected winners that make the start of an F1 season especially exciting.
