MXGP Returns to South Africa

The FIM and Infront Moto Racing have announced that MXGP will return to South Africa for the first time in 18 years. Johannesburg will host the MXGP of South Africa on 4–5 July 2026, bringing the Motocross World Championship back to the African continent.

This marks a major addition to the championship’s overseas calendar and highlights MXGP as a truly global series. South Africa first hosted a World Championship event in 1985 at Corobrik Park near Johannesburg, with Jacky Vimond winning the 250cc Grand Prix. MXGP later returned to Sun City from 2004 to 2006, with winners including Stefan Everts, Antonio Cairoli, Josh Coppins, and Mickael Pichon.

The last MXGP event in South Africa was held in 2008 at Nelspruit, featuring MX1 and MX2 races, won by Jonathan Barragan and Tommy Searle.

Johannesburg’s 2026 event will showcase top riders and teams once again, celebrating South Africa’s rich motocross history and reinforcing MXGP’s global status.
