FIM welcomes Iranian initiative to encourage women in motorcycling: In Iran, women have faced restrictions for many years when it comes to getting motorcycle licenses.
However, thanks to the efforts of the Motorcycle and Automobile Federation of Iran (MAFIRI), along with support from the Iranian government and the Ministry of Sports and Youth, this issue is now being addressed, and positive changes are being made.
In 2022, the FIM Women’s Commission (CFM) launched the *Women in Motorcycling in Arabic Countries Campaign* to celebrate International Women’s Day and promote women motorcyclists in Arabic countries. This initiative is part of the theme #BreakTheBias. The FIM and national federations have also signed the Amman Declaration on Women in Motorcycling to help improve the situation for women in motorcycling across Arabic countries.
In 2016, MAFIRI allowed female riders to use circuits for training. Since 2019, women have been participating in all-female competitions, and the FIM supports this positive step.
Maziar Nazemi, President of MAFIRI, explained: “Issuing motorcycle licenses for women, with proper safety measures and training, promotes equal opportunities and empowers women socially and economically. The Ministry of Sports and Youth consulted us about changing Article 20 of the Traffic Law in the Seventh Development Plan.”
He added, “After discussing with female coaches, experts, and provincial heads, we agreed to support this initiative. We emphasized that this step, while considering cultural and safety concerns, will not harm the public. Instead, it will help advance society and the economy, especially for women.”
MAFIRI is ready to use its network of female coaches and champions across the country to help train interested women. Federation tracks will also be used as safe spaces for training.
Iranian women have already shown their skills in motorcycle sports, achieving impressive results. They have excelled in international motocross competitions and participated in the Asia Cup for motorcycle racing for the first time, bringing pride to the country.
This new initiative, developed with the help of female trainers and experts, is a big step toward increasing the involvement of Iranian women in various sports.
