Ferrari vs Mercedes: How Close?

After the 2026 Formula 1 Chinese Grand Prix, data shows that Scuderia Ferrari is getting closer in performance to Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team than many expected, but Mercedes still has the edge overall.

Lap times and speed charts from Shanghai reveal that Ferrari’s car was competitive in several key sectors, especially in the medium‑speed corners, where it matched or even slightly outpaced the Mercedes thanks to aerodynamic improvements.

However, Mercedes maintained an advantage in top‑speed and straight‑line performance, which helped its drivers pull slightly ahead on many laps. This suggests Ferrari isn’t yet on equal footing overall, but the gap has narrowed compared to earlier races this season.

Engine performance numbers also show Ferrari’s power unit has improved, but Mercedes still produces better acceleration out of slow corners — a key factor over race distance.

Experts say if Ferrari continues refining its car balance and aerodynamic setup, it could challenge Mercedes more consistently in upcoming races; but for now, Mercedes remains the benchmark.

In summary, Ferrari is closer to Mercedes than before, but still not quite at the same level across all performance areas — indicating an exciting battle ahead as the season progresses.
