FIM Launches Motorcycle Concussion Guidelines

The FIM has released its first-ever Concussion Assessment and Management Guidelines, specifically designed for motorcycle sports at all levels. Concussions, a serious type of brain injury, require prompt recognition and proper care to prevent short- and long-term health risks.

Developed after the 2024 FIM Medical Summit in Lyon, France, these guidelines provide sport-specific procedures for assessing, managing, and safely returning riders to competition after a concussion. Key features include early detection, mandatory removal from riding when concussion is suspected, medically supervised return-to-sport, and the “9 R’s” approach: Reduce, Recognise, Remove, Refer, Rest, Recover, Rehabilitation, Return-to-sport, and Review.

The guidelines also specify minimum exclusion periods for adults and children and include a graduated return-to-riding program tailored for motorcycling. FIM President Jorge Viegas emphasized that rider safety is central to the sport’s sustainable growth, while FIM Medical Director Dr. David McManus highlighted the guidelines’ evidence-based approach and the importance of rider education.

These guidelines will be regularly updated based on emerging research to ensure the highest standards of care for all motorcycle riders worldwide.
