Giuseppe Luongo Retires from MXGP

At the Infront Moto Racing Board meeting on 11 December 2026, Giuseppe Luongo announced his retirement as President of Infront Moto Racing (IMR). His son, David Luongo, has been nominated as the new President to maintain stability and continuity in MXGP.

Giuseppe Luongo is considered the driving force behind modern Motocross. Under his leadership, major innovations in rules, management, infrastructure, and media coverage were introduced. He began as a Motocross rider and later managed the Suzuki factory team from 1989 to 1992, where he recruited Stefan Everts.

During his 42-year career as a promoter, Luongo organized more than 800 events, including World Championships, European Championships, and Nations events. He founded the current European Championship structure, the FIM SuperMoto World Championship, the FIM Women’s World Championship, and also promoted the Supercross World Championship. He even organized several FIM World Champions’ Award galas.

From a young age, Luongo dreamed of giving Motocross global visibility. He realized early that television and better infrastructure were essential for the sport’s growth. His efforts made Motocross more accessible, safer, and more professional for riders, teams, media, and fans.

At 65, he has spent 50 years in Motocross—8 as a rider and 42 as a promoter. He worked closely with many legends, including Ricky Johnson, Stefan Everts, Tony Cairoli, Tim Gajser, Ryan Dungey, Jeffrey Herlings, Jorge Prado and many others.

Some of his most important contributions include:

  • Introducing live TV for Motocross

  • Creating the pyramid structure for rider development

  • Improving paddock and circuit safety

  • Building the double-floor pit-lane and Skybox

  • Launching MXGP-TV.com live streaming in 2011, making Motocross the first world championship to stream live globally

In his farewell message, Luongo said the decision is emotional but necessary, as he wants to spend more time with his family. He believes MXGP is in safe hands with David Luongo and Daniele Rizzi, who will bring fresh ideas while maintaining the sport’s traditions.

He thanked riders, teams, manufacturers, fans, volunteers, FIM leadership, and the Infront Group for supporting him throughout his journey. He expressed deep gratitude to his family, especially his wife Ursula and his son David.

Infront President & CEO Philippe Blatter praised Luongo as a pioneer and visionary, saying MXGP is a global success largely because of his leadership. FIM President Jorge Viegas also thanked him for his lifelong dedication.

After 50 years in the sport, Luongo retires knowing what he built will continue to grow under the current leadership. The global Motocross community thanked him for his lifelong service and wished him well for the future.
