Dakar Tyre Problems Continue

At the 2026 Dakar Rally, many riders are struggling with tyre issues that are affecting their performance and overall results. What should be a matter of skill and strategy has turned into a kind of “tyre lottery,” where luck with tyre choice and durability is playing a big role.

The race’s tough terrain — particularly deep sand and hard rocks — is pushing tyres to their limits, and many competitors have suffered punctures, blown tyres or excessive wear. Some riders have lost hours due to multiple tyre changes or having to ride cautiously to protect their tyres. This has dramatically shaken up the standings, with once‑leading riders dropping far down the leaderboard.

Teams are also finding it difficult to predict the best tyre setups, as conditions vary widely from stage to stage. The changing surfaces make it hard for crews to decide between softer, grippier tyres and tougher, more durable options — and choosing the wrong one can cost significant time.

The ongoing tyre troubles show that, beyond rider skill and bike speed, tyre performance and strategy are proving to be crucial factors at this year’s Dakar Rally.
